All Saints Catholic High School 6-16 Amhurst Park London N16 5AFFrom Year 8 onwards, all students continue to study either French or Spanish. From September 2026, all Year 7 students will study French. Our ambitious and inclusive curriculum aims to develop confident, adaptable and independent language learners who can communicate effectively in a range of authentic contexts.
Students build the knowledge, skills and confidence to understand and respond to both spoken and written language, while developing increasing fluency, accuracy and spontaneity in their speaking. They are encouraged to express themselves with confidence, refine their pronunciation and communicate meaning effectively.
Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, students also develop the ability to write for a variety of purposes and audiences, applying an increasingly broad range of vocabulary and grammatical structures with accuracy and independence. Alongside their linguistic development, students gain a deeper understanding of the cultures and communities where the language is spoken, fostering curiosity, respect and global awareness.

The contents of the course cover five themes:
Year 10:
Autumn Term: Describing activities you can do in a city you visit
Spring Term: Describing life at school
Summer term: Explaining what sporting activities. music, tv and famous people you like.
Year 11:
Autumn Term: Explaining the chores you do at home, how your earn money and the world of work
Spring Term: Exploring healthy eating, mealtimes and new trends. Comparing old and new eating habits Emphasis on simple past and imperfect
Summer term: Exploring international social and environmental problems and discussing how we can support solidarity through sport.
The course will enable students to:
Develop their ability to communicate confidently and coherently with native speakers.
Express and develop thoughts and ideas spontaneously and fluently.
Listen to and understand clearly articulated standard speech at normal speed.
Deepen their knowledge about how the language works, enrich their vocabulary and be able to translate texts from English to the target language and vice versa.
Develop awareness and understanding of the culture and identity of the countries and communities where the language is spoken.
Make appropriate links to other areas of the curriculum to enable deeper learning.
Year 10 /11 will have access to the E-book format of the Edexcel GCSE course.
Edexcel GCSE assessment in languages consists of four units based on the following skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Each of the four examinations equates for 25% of the total mark.
All examinations are taken at the end of Y11.
The four papers are sent to Edexcel/Pearson for external marking.
The students can be entered for Foundation or Higher papers.
Thanks to the language skills acquired at Key Stage 3, students are well prepared to do a GCSE in Language. They should already know how to talk about themselves, their family, hobbies, where they live, school, holidays, food and drink.
The key to success is regular homework and the ability to understand or use the target language for different purposes and different settings.
We have a programme of ‘twilight’ language lessons in Polish, Turkish, Portuguese and Spanish. Students who attend regularly can enter for an additional GCSE exam or A level exam.
