At Key Stage 3, students follow the National Curriculum for Science through a bespoke school scheme of work. The curriculum is designed to develop secure scientific knowledge, practical enquiry skills and confidence across the three main disciplines: biology, chemistry and physics.
Students study science through carefully sequenced topics, building their understanding year by year. In Years 7 and 8, students follow a topic-based curriculum across biology, chemistry and physics. In Year 9, students complete key Key Stage 3 content during the autumn term before beginning the Edexcel Combined Science GCSE course from January.
Throughout Key Stage 3, students are taught to work scientifically by developing skills such as planning investigations, identifying variables, collecting and analysing data, drawing graphs, evaluating evidence and using scientific vocabulary accurately.

Autumn term |
Students begin Year 7 with an introduction to working safely in a science laboratory, including risks, hazards, scientific equipment, variables and graph skills. They then study biology topics including cells, microscopes, unicellular organisms, tissues and organs, the skeletal and muscular systems, reproduction, and health and drugs. |

Spring term |
In the spring term, students move into chemistry. They study particles and the nature of matter, including solids, liquids and gases, changes of state, elements, compounds and mixtures. They then learn about pure and impure substances, dissolving, diffusion and separation techniques such as filtration, evaporation, distillation and chromatography. Students also begin studying chemical reactions, acids and alkalis, indicators and the pH scale. |

Summer term |
In the summer term, students complete further chemistry on atoms, elements, conservation of mass, metals and non-metals, before moving into physics. They study forces, force diagrams, balanced and unbalanced forces, pressure, space physics, the solar system, gravity, seasons and the size of the universe. They also begin electricity, including current, measuring electricity, series and parallel circuits, and potential difference. |
Year 8

Students begin Year 8 with biology. They study gas exchange, lungs, breathing, alveoli, lung disease and the effects of exercise and smoking. They then move on to photosynthesis, respiration, ecosystems, nutrition, digestion, inheritance, DNA, variation, natural selection and biodiversity. |

In the spring term, students study chemistry topics including the Earth, the rock cycle, Earth’s resources, the atmosphere, the carbon cycle, the periodic table, patterns and trends, groups and periods, the reactivity series, oxidation, displacement, thermal decomposition, the blast furnace, ceramics, polymers and composites. They also begin physics topics linked to energy, fuels, electricity costs and magnetism. |

Summer term |
In the summer term, students continue physics. They study magnetism, magnetic fields, the Earth’s magnetic field, waves, sound, frequency, amplitude, wavelength, the human ear, ultrasound, light, reflection, colour, lenses, the human eye and cameras. They also study energy transfers, including conduction, convection, radiation, stored energy, fuels, metabolism and conservation of energy. |

At Key Stage 4, students follow either the Edexcel GCSE Combined Science course or the Edexcel GCSE Separate Sciences courses (Biology, Chemistry and Physics).
All students begin Year 9 studying GCSE science content through the Edexcel Combined Science pathway. During Year 10, students are assessed regularly and a small number of students may be selected to follow the Separate Sciences route based on assessment outcomes, demonstrated attainment and teacher recommendations.
Practical work forms a central part of science education at Key Stage 4. Throughout the course, students complete a wide range of laboratory investigations which develop their ability to plan experiments, identify variables, collect and analyse data, evaluate evidence and draw valid scientific conclusions.
GCSE Combined Science
Students study Biology, Chemistry and Physics and are awarded two GCSE qualifications. Assessment consists of six examinations (two Biology, two Chemistry and two Physics), each lasting 1 hour 10 minutes.
GCSE Separate Sciences
Students study GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects and are awarded three GCSE qualifications. Assessment consists of six examinations (two Biology, two Chemistry and two Physics), each lasting 1 hour 45 minutes.
Year 10
Autumn Term
Students study key Biology and Chemistry topics including genetics, disease, atomic structure, bonding and quantitative chemistry.
Spring Term
Students continue Chemistry and begin Physics, studying energy, electricity, radioactivity and particle models. Separate Science students begin additional content.
Summer Term
Students complete Biology Paper 2 topics including plant biology, transport systems, hormones, homeostasis, ecosystems and biodiversity.
Year 11 – Combined Science
Autumn Term
Students complete the remaining GCSE Chemistry and Physics content including rates of reaction, fuels, climate change, forces, magnetism and electromagnetism.
Spring Term
Students undertake mock examinations, intervention programmes and structured exam preparation.
Summer Term
Students complete an intensive revision programme before sitting six GCSE Combined Science examinations.
Year 11 – Separate Sciences
Autumn Term
Students complete the additional Biology, Chemistry and Physics content required for the Separate Sciences pathway.
Spring Term
Students complete mock examinations and targeted revision of both core and additional Separate Science content.
Summer Term
Students undertake intensive revision before sitting six examinations leading to three separate GCSE qualifications.
